Genesis of Khalsa College
The provision of higher education to Sikhs and Punjabis within Punjab during the British Raj Period in the late 19th Century was envisioned by the Sikh Scholars of that time. Singh Sabha Movement and Chief Khalsa Diwan approached the then Sikh Maharajas and the people of Punjab to donate land and raise funds for the purpose. People of Amritsar, Lahore, and other cities of Punjab including rich Sikh families and the Maharajas donated land and funds for the construction of Khalsa College.
Khalsa College Establishment Committee was set up in 1890 with Colonel W. R. M. Holroyd, Director of Public Instruction, Punjab, as President, and W. Bell, Principal of Government College, Lahore, as Secretary. Among the native constituents of this 121-member committee were Sir Attar Singh, Gurdial Singh Maan of Nabha, Diwan Gurmukh Singh of Patiala, Bhai Kahn Singh, Professor Gurmukh Singh, and Sardar Jawahir Singh. Many princely states of British India and Sikh people of Punjab including Maharaja Rajendra Singh of Patiala rendered financial help for the establishment of Khalsa College.
History of KCVAS
In the year 2009, Khalsa College Charitable Society Governing Council thought of starting College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences to develop technically sound human resources in the field of veterinary health, animal production, and management to cater to the increasing demand of veterinarians in the state. The institution was granted NOC by the Punjab State Government to start a new veterinary and animal science college at Amritsar to start B.V.Sc. & A.H. (Bachelor of Veterinary Sciences and Animal Husbandry) 5-year program. Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana accorded affiliation in the year 2010.
Dr. S. K. Jand, a highly qualified, experienced, and dedicated Professor joined as founder Principal of Khalsa College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences (KCVAS) in February 2010. The college enrolled the first batch of students for the degree of B. V. Sc. & A. H. in October 2010 with an existing staff of three Professors, seven Assistant Professors, and nine non-teaching staff. With the KCVAS building under construction, the College activities were initiated in the building of the Department of Physiotherapy, Khalsa College, Amritsar. In view of a few deficiencies in terms of infrastructure and faculty and in spite of best efforts by the management and the college staff, the permission for admission of the second batch of students during the 2011- 12 session was withheld by VCI. Though there was no major deficiency still there prevailed an uncertainty even for the conduct of the annual examination and the students were stressed regarding their careers. With the constant encouragement from the Honorary Secretary, S. Rajinder Mohan Chinna, and untiring efforts by S. Ajmer Singh, Legal Secretary, and Dr. S. K. Jand, the Principal of KCVAS with the intervention of Hon’ble Punjab & Haryana High Court the annual examinations of students were timely conducted in June 2012, under the supervision of GADVASU, the affiliating University of KCVAS. Provisional admissions were again permitted during the 2012 -13 session.
With the blessings of Wahe Guru Ji, the helping hand of the management, and untiring efforts of teaching and non-teaching staff of the college it got recognition from the Veterinary Council of India (VCI) and it was included in the 1st schedule of the Government of India vide Gazette Notification No, 1861 dated 3rd September 2015. In the year 2021, GADVASU granted permanent affiliation to the college and ICAR also granted accreditation to the college for a period of five years with a score of 3.17 for the degree program and 3.11 to the College equivalent to Grade "A".
